1. รากศัพท์ภาษามือ
รากศัพท์ในพจนานุกรมภาษามือไทยฉบับนี้ใช้ตามปทานุกรมภาษามือไทยฉบับปรับปรุงและแก้ไขเพิ่มเติม(ม่านฟ้า สุวรรณรัตน์ และ ชาร์ลส์ โอเว่น ไรลีย์, 2533: LXXI-LXXXVI) คำอธิบาย: รากศัพท์ เป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่ใช้แทนท่ามือพื้นฐานซึ่งเป็นท่าที่ใช้ประกอบสร้างคำศัพท์ภาษามือ ได้แก่ ตำแหน่งการวางมือ ทิศทางการเคลื่อนไหวของมือ การหันฝ่ามือ และองค์ประกอบที่ไม่ใช้มือคือ สีหน้าและท่าทาง รากศัพท์จึงเปรียบเหมือนอักษรหรือหน่วยเสียง (ทางภาษาศาสตร์ก็คือหน่วยภาษามือ)ที่เป็นพื้นฐานของภาษามือที่ประกอบกันเพื่อสร้างคำหรือหน่วยภาษาที่ใหญ่ขึ้นเป็นคำ วลี ประโยค และข้อความในภาษามือไทย จำนวนรากศัพท์ทั้งสิ้น 96 รูป ดังต่อไปนี้

The following chart of handshape order, and the symbols to represent to represent them, is what might be called the “alphabet” of the Thai Sign Language. Such a simple play on words is useful, but not entirely accurate nor adequate. Sign language are not “manual” versions of spoken language. Handshape does represent the most convenient aspect by which to organize a sign language vocabulary, yet handshape is not always the most important aspect of a sign, either in expression or meaning. The five aspects of sign language – handshape, location, motion, orientation, and the broad category of non-manuals and facials – occur simultaneously. Handshapes often imply or include motion, so are most easily used to group vocabulary by basic categories. An order based on handshape is accessible and intuitive to both the native signer and the beginning student. The order of sign group categories of this work are outlined on page 51 (pg LI).
The symbolic icons, or “radicals”, are more often compared to Chinese or Japanese character radicals than to the ABC’s of roman type scripts. The radicals across the top of every page in this Dictionary show the sequence position in which the signs of that page occur.
To better understand Thai Sign Language, and to gain the best use of this Dictionary, learn the following order of the basic handshapes. These are the ABC’s of TSL.
